Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a very gentle light touch hands on technique that examines membranes and movement of the cerebral spinal fluid in and around the central nervous system.

CST relieves compression of the head (by aligning the cranium bones), neck and lower back. This can decrease pain and release both emotional and physical stress and tension. The gentle technique restores cranial mobility, release restrictions of the head, neck and nerves. Relieving tension in the central nervous system promotes the feeling of well-being by eliminating pain and boosting health and immunity.

Conditions that CST can help:

Neck and back pain

Headaches and migraines

Stress and tension

Tinnitus

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ)

Depression and anxiety

Insomnia

During Pregnancy, the body experiences many hormonal and physical changes. Some of these physical developments can cause difficulties throughout the pregnancy. However, a lot of these discomforts can be resolved by highly trained Physiotherapists who treat pelvic and rib related dysfunctions due to the baby’s growth and related postural changes; ligament laxity with the release of the hormone relaxin; and core muscle weakness including the pelvic floor.

Yek has specialist training related to the issues that pregnancy and child birth can cause. Our services include:

Whole body assessment and treatment of any musculoskeletal issues related to pregnancy such as lumbo-pelvic pain (could be presented as low back, pelvis, sacro-iliac joint or hip pain)

Ante & post-natal Pilates core exercises

Post-natal exercise programs and returning to sports after giving birth

Rectus diastasis assessment and treatment

De Quervain’s thumb tendonitis

It is recommended that at 6 weeks post-partum, mums should have a post-natal physio check where the pelvis alignment, rib alignment, and rectus abdominus diastasis is measured and the alignment can be corrected. Six weeks post-partum is normally when your Obstetrician advise you can start exercising again. Its very important that your pelvis and ribs are in good alignment before you start exercising again as pregnancy and childbirth affects these. Very often new mums have many musculoskeletal pains such as upper back pain from feeding positions, and lower back pain from lifting the baby in non-optimal ways. Everyone is so focused on the baby and often the mother gets neglected. We get mums functional again and back to their preferred exercises and advise on the best postures to avoid pain. The rectus diastasis can vary from a superficial tear that is only a few centimetres long to a deep, full thickness tear from the chest to the pubic bone. Physiotherapist will conduct a detailed assessment, skilled palpation and functional tests to determine the extent and severity of the rectus diastasis. We would then be able to advise clients specifically on how to optimize healing, prescribe rectus diastasis corrective exercises to aid closing up the gap and appropriate types and levels of exercise.

Treatments We Offer:

Biofeedback and electrical muscle stimulation for pelvic floor muscle retraining

Internal pelvic floor muscle release

Perineal and internal scar massage

C-Section scar massage

Post-natal physio check at 6 weeks to check the alignment of your body (especially the pelvis, lower back & ribs); rectus diastasis check and corrective exercises if necessary; pelvic floor check; and posture advice for breastfeeding and picking up your baby

Post-natal rehabilitation and returning to exercise advice

In addition to pelvic health, we offer a comprehensive range of general physiotherapy and acupuncture to provide a truly integrated approach to optimising women’s health.

What Can I Expect From My Women’s Health Appointment?

Your assessment and treatment will be tailored specifically to you and your presenting complaints. A comprehensive subjective and objective evaluation is conducted to identify all the factors that are contributing to your symptoms.

A detailed subjective assessment history will be taken in complete privacy. This would include reviewing your past medical history and asking appropriate questions relating to pain, bladder and bowel, and sexual function. We are very sensitive to the fact that these conditions may be difficult to discuss, but it will be a safe place for you to talk about anything that concerns you. If you are uncomfortable to discuss some issues initially that is fine too, but having a complete picture would make the therapist understand your condition better and improve your condition in the shortest time possible.

The objective assessment will look at global contributors such as breathing patterns, posture and alignment of the pelvis, lower back, hip and thorax (ribs), movement patterns, overall strength and conditioning, and the pelvic floor muscle function.

Your physical assessment will begin with an examination of your abdominal muscles, pelvis, and lumbar spine – these structures house all your pelvic floor muscles; a dysfunction in one of these areas can result in dysfunction elsewhere. Your rib cage and diaphragm will also be assessed. If appropriate, you may then be offered an internal examination. This is an important part of your assessment and necessary in identifying the tone, strength and control of your pelvic floor muscles.

Pelvic Floor Internal Examination

Using finger palpation, the pelvic floor muscles and connective tissue will be assessed for injury or scarring, signs of pelvic organ prolapse, muscle tone, tenderness, sensation and neural sensitivity. The pelvic floor muscle will be tested for strength and endurance. Muscle strength is graded. It is important to determine if the left and right superficial and deep pelvic floor muscles are working together, and if not, why not.

We can then develop a specific and individualised treatment and exercise programme. The assessment findings will be discussed with you, and treatment will depend upon the findings and your symptoms. A treatment plan will then be formulated with personalized short and long-term goals.

Women’s health physiotherapists require advanced training to have the appropriate skills to assess your pelvic floor through internal palpation. This assessment is gentle and non-threatening. Your physiotherapist will be able to identify any problems with your pelvic floor and create a treatment plan if necessary.

It may seem strange or uncomfortable to assess the pelvic floor by completing an internal exam of the vagina or rectum, however internal examination of the pelvic floor is the international gold standard by which assessment and treatment of the pelvic floor is carried out for optimal outcomes.

Physiotherapists carrying out internal pelvic floor examinations are highly trained, sensitive professionals who will maintain your comfort and dignity at all times. They will thoroughly explain what the assessment and treatment will involve (including proper draping), give you alternative options, and obtain your consent before proceeding. You may withdraw your consent at any time. When the pelvic floor muscles are assessed this way, the research has shown that the interventions carried out by a physiotherapist for pelvic floor problems are highly successful and should be the first line of treatment for incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and pelvic pain.

Acupuncture is a branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine used to alleviate pain by producing the body’s own natural endorphins; and relax muscles by releasing trigger points. Fine sterile single use needles are inserted into various acupoints along the body’s energy pathways called meridians, where the life energy “qi” circulates throughout the body. Acupoints on the meridians form an interlinking network to the musculoskeletal system and the internal organs. Depending on the ailment, acupoints selected near the area or away from the area (still on the meridian) are selected to unlock the “qi”. A true East meets West approach.

Common conditions treated by acupuncture:

The thoracic spine and rib cage can be a source of pain in regions such as the spine, chest, shoulders, neck, and lower back whilst also can cause referred pain anywhere in the arms and upper body. It can be the source of poor posture, spinal scoliosis, digestive issues (such as reflux, indigestion and heart burn) and poor nerve supply to the abdominal musculature leading to “weak core” muscles. The thorax and rib cage can also be responsible for non-optimal loading through the pelvis, lumbar spine and hips causing various osteoarthritic conditions in the lower limbs.

At Zenith Physio, we treat the following thoracic & rib cage dysfunctions:

Stiffness & pain in the upper back, neck and shoulder region

Scoliosis from moderate to severe cases
